Film Review – The Post

Through the generosity of a very dear friend, thanks so much Suzanne, l was able to see The Post yesterday.

It’s a good film and one that l would recommend to others. It’s topical, with a good script and strong performances across the board. What can l say about Meryl Streep that hasn’t already been said before; another great performance. Tom Hanks gives a strong performance as Ben Bradlee and good performances from the ensemble cast, especially Bob Odenkirk, Bruce Greenwood and Bradly Whitford.

You will notice that l mention a lot of male actors and that’s because this film shows very clearly what it was like to be a female in authority at that time. The film is set in 1971 and it’s very obvious that it’s still a male dominated world; the scenes where Katherine Graham(Meryl Streep) is ignored or walking into a boardroom meeting being the only female convey this without the need for words.

The other star of this film is the newsroom. Print newspapers were still king then and it’s interesting to watch this fast disappearing world. We now have 24hr news channels and fake news everywhere. This film reminds us how important it is to have quality, independent news reporting.

4.5 stars out of 5 for me.
